Not an after lunch topic -- or is it? Maybe after lunch is when it all comes up! Judging by the shelves in the supermarkets, druggists and chemists' shops, we have an obsession with constipation and dyspepsia. Why? Maybe it's got something to do with what we eat. Here's why...
Any individuals who have suffered from dyspepsia will know what an irksome and often distressingly painful condition it can be. It is also a condition which baffles medical scientists; whilst the major symptom is hardly ambiguous - persistent upper abdominal pain - isolating the cause has proved altogether more elusive. In fact, dyspepsia is diagnosed as such in the absence of any underlying disease.
If hasty eating becomes a habit, dyspepsia, along with other stomach complications, will surely result. There is no exception. Nature is a stern creditor, resenting any infraction of her laws. If you violate them, you will certainly suffer for it. And the severest penalties she inflicts are for transgressing the laws of digestion. Under the familiar title, dyspepsia, we group various distressing digestive disorders, most of which could be avoided by properly chewing the food.
There isn't a drug that has no side-effects. SSRI drugs that are used for the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders are no exception. One common set of SSRI side-effects are those that affect the gastrointestinal system, i.e., stomach and intestines. How serious are they?
Probiotics are increasingly promoted for a number of bowel conditions, and now are making their way into yogurt and other dairy products, but is there any evidence that they are helpful? Probiotics have been shown to reduce antibiotic induced diarrhea and children, and there is some evidence that they help irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), but there is no evidence they help constipation. If you buy products with probiotics, insist on knowing what microbes are in there, because they haven't all been shown to work.
Indigestion, heartburn, dyspepsia, stomach upset, and reflux are amongst the most uncomfortable experiences we can have, but they are not permanent - not after you get speedy relief from an effective colon cleanse. It can happen to anyone regardless of age, gender or race. Perhaps the best way of preventing indigestion is by maintaining a healthy and balanced diet, taking regular exercise, and avoiding stressful situation.
